Jeans for Genes Day at Seva College

Students at Seva College came together to support a great cause for Jeans for Genes Day. To raise money for charity, students baked their own delicious treats and sold them at a fun bake sale. From cakes and flapjacks to other tasty treats, there was something for everyone to enjoy!

Everyone also got involved by wearing their jeans to show their support and help raise awareness for the cause. It was a fantastic day of fundraising, teamwork, and community spirit, with students working together to make a positive difference and raise money for charity.

 

A special delivery

One of our students recently took part in a community visit to the Post Office to send a letter to a family member.

As part of the visit, he discovered that the Post Office was located inside a local supermarket — a new experience and a great opportunity to practise navigating community services.

He took part in the process from start to finish, preparing his envelope, finding the Post Office and paying to send his letter.

The visit provided a meaningful opportunity to put his ASDAN Life Skills Challenge into practice in a real-life setting.

Experiences like these form an important part of our Preparation for Adulthood curriculum, helping students develop practical skills, confidence and independence within their local community.

From Seed to Harvest

Over the last year Students from Neasden College have been enjoying weekly visits to the South Harrow allotment, building on the fantastic work already established there.

Our journey began in February, when the weather was wet and the ground was muddy. Students planted potatoes, tomatoes, cucumbers and onions and, as spring arrived, watched their seedlings begin to grow.

With plenty of care, sunshine and water, our students were rewarded with a fantastic summer harvest — all grown naturally without the use of pesticides or other chemicals.

The experience didn’t end at the allotment. Students have been using the produce they grew to prepare, cook and share food at college, experiencing the whole journey from seed to plate.

The allotment provides valuable opportunities to develop practical skills, responsibility and an understanding of where our food comes from, while encouraging students to spend time outdoors and engage with the natural environment.
And perhaps we may even have inspired a future horticulturist or two!

 

TfL Citizenship Assembly

Another highlight of the Spring term was an engaging assembly delivered by the TfL Citizens Team. The session focused on developing the knowledge and skills required for safe and responsible travel on public transport, including journey planning and the benefits of active travel.

Learners were highly engaged throughout, demonstrating enthusiasm and curiosity. They asked thoughtful questions, contributed confidently to discussions, and clearly enjoyed exploring real-life travel scenarios, helping to build both their knowledge and confidence in a meaningful way.

This workshop plays an important role in supporting learners to travel as independently and safely as possible—an essential step in their preparation for adulthood.

Coffee Morning

We were delighted to receive such positive feedback following our Spring term coffee morning. Thank you to all the parents and carers who were able to attend—it was a valuable opportunity to come together and continue building our Seva FE community.
Learners played an active role in the event, baking cakes and serving refreshments with confidence and care, ensuring everyone felt welcome. The morning focused on future pathways and included a presentation from Caroline Farah at Shaw Trust on Supported Internships. Following the event, Caroline shared:

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for inviting us to your Coffee Morning. You have a lovely centre, and it was great to meet so many students and parents. I really think that a Supported Internship would be a fantastic pathway for many of your young people. It was lovely to see the students being so enthusiastic—that’s exactly what we love to see.”

Horticulture

At the start of the Spring term, we resumed our weekly visits to the college allotment, with a focus on preparing our own plot. This has given learners a valuable opportunity to take ownership of what they grow. The group has already dug over the area and planted potatoes and onions next to our the polytunnel, with early signs of growth now beginning to appear.

Despite a cold and wet start to February, learners have demonstrated great commitment and enthusiasm and are now looking ahead to the summer months with optimism.

Back at the Neasden site, students also worked collaboratively to build a raised bed, further developing their practical skills and teamwork. This space will be used to grow flowers and herbs to support our cooking sessions at college.
We look forward to sharing further updates as the field to fork project develops.

Work Experience at the Hilton Hotel

Having previously visited the Hilton Hotel for a behind-the-scenes tour, students in our London Eye class were later given the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience within the hospitality setting. During their time on site, they supported preparations for a range of services, including breakfast, lunch, and conference events.

This experience enabled students to develop a deeper understanding of the working environment, highlighting the importance of teamwork, clear communication, multitasking, and attention to detail. It provided a valuable introduction to the world of work, helping to build their confidence and professionalism.

Student Comments:

Leah: “I learnt there are a range of different employment roles in a hotel setting such as chambermaid, chef, waiters, receptionist, concierge and security staff.”

Susan: “The most challenging part of the work experience was setting the cutlery in the correct order for different services and making the bed with the bedding in a particular way. I managed with help from the staff and learnt that practice makes perfect!”

Starr: “The most challenging thing was setting the table, but I managed this by really listening to the instructions.”

Adrian: “I enjoyed helping and spending time with the Hilton Wembley’s Human Resources manager, Veronica. I also liked learning about setting tables up for breakfast, lunch and dinner service. It’s always good to know which glasses and cutlery are suitable for each meal.”
