At Seva Education FE College, our curriculum reflects Seva Education’s ambition for every young person to experience belonging, develop independence and achieve their potential.
Our curriculum prepares young people for adulthood, supporting each learner to become as independent, confident and active in their life and community as possible. Through four personalised learning pathways, learners access an appropriate balance of academic and vocational learning, communication, functional and life skills, personal development and real-world experiences, with opportunities to work towards recognised accreditation where appropriate.
Preparation for Adulthood is embedded throughout our curriculum through four key areas:
Together, these support learners to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to make choices, participate in their communities and progress towards meaningful adult lives.
Every learner follows one of four personalised learning pathways, reflecting their starting point, learning profile, communication and independence needs, EHCP outcomes and aspirations.
A predominantly formal curriculum developing academic, vocational and functional skills, with appropriate accreditation and progression towards further education, training, supported internships or employment.
Formal learning and accreditation delivered through a more personalised and supported curriculum, combining academic and functional skills with independence, employability and personal development.
A developmental curriculum focused on functional literacy and numeracy, communication, independence, life skills and community inclusion, with opportunities for appropriate accreditation.
Highly personalised learning for learners with the most complex needs, focused on communication, engagement, sensory learning, independence, wellbeing and participation in the community through meaningful, real-life experiences.
Our FE curriculum brings together three areas, with the balance and level of learning adapted to each learner’s pathway.
Learning focuses on developing the skills young people need for greater independence and participation in adult life, including:
The PSHE Association framework and resources support a structured and relevant PSHE programme adapted to the needs and experiences of young adults.
English and maths are taught at a level appropriate to each learner, ranging from functional communication, literacy and numeracy through to accredited Functional Skills.
Teaching is supported by resources including Pass Functional Skills, White Rose and MathsWatch. For learners who need further development of foundational reading skills, phonics-based teaching and intervention may be used where appropriate.
Learners following developmental pathways access the Equals Formal and Semi-Formal curricula, supporting communication, functional learning, independence and engagement.
Digital skills are developed where appropriate, helping learners use technology safely, confidently and increasingly independently.
Learners broaden their experiences, interests and practical skills through opportunities including:
These opportunities enable learners to experience new environments, develop confidence and apply their learning beyond the classroom.
Accreditation opportunities are selected according to each learner’s abilities, aspirations and intended destination.
Where appropriate, learners may also work towards Digital Functional Skills from Entry Level 3 upwards, according to their individual pathway and learning goals.
In exceptional cases, where a learner has a particular academic strength or interest, we may support them to undertake independent study towards an appropriate GCSE qualification. This is considered individually and does not form part of our standard taught qualification offer.
Qualifications are selected to provide meaningful challenge and support future progression, alongside the wider skills learners need for adult life.
Our careers programme helps learners explore future possibilities, develop employability skills and gain meaningful experience of the world of work.
The programme is informed by the Gatsby Benchmarks and supported by the Talentino SEND careers framework. As part of a Careers Hub network, we work with external partners to strengthen our provision and broaden opportunities for learners.
Our partnership with Hilton Hotel Wembley provides learners with opportunities to experience a real workplace and develop employability skills and confidence in a supported environment.
We continue to build relationships with new employers and community partners. This year, for example, some of our Big Ben learners will have the opportunity to undertake work experience at Kentish Town City Farm.
We also liaise with Mencap to explore further work-related opportunities for our young people.
Through careers education, guidance and real-world experiences, we support learners to progress towards further education, supported internships, employment and other meaningful adult destinations.
Assessment at Seva FE reflects each learner’s pathway and individual learning needs. We recognise that meaningful progress can take different forms.
Evidence for Learning is used where appropriate to capture and demonstrate progress over time, including achievements that may not be fully represented through formal assessment.
