Meet our board of governors

Governance

Roles and responsibilities of the Governors Board

The purpose of the Governors Board is to work together to have a positive impact on the attainment of the students in the school and ensure that all our students, staff and visitors are safe.

The Governors Board is made up of our Directors, Business Managers and the Exec Head Teacher. They bring a vast degree of experience to the school, ranging from social care, positive behaviour support, finance and education.

The Governors Board find being part of the board a worthwhile and rewarding experience. They enjoy being involved in the life of the school, being able to make a difference and seeing the children and young people benefit.

The full Governors Board meets every month. Some responsibilities are delegated to two Committees, the Standards and Operations Committee and the Resources Committee. The Standards and Operations Committee concentrates on the curriculum and the achievement of students as well as overall Health & Safety compliance. The Resources Committee deals with the finances of the school and works to ensure there is money to provide the expertise and learning materials to enable student achievement.

The key roles of the Governors Board are:

  • Strategic Leadership – the decision making based around the values, aims and aspirations of the school
  • Support and Challenge – the monitoring and evaluation of the school’s effectiveness, asking challenging questions and pressing for improvement
  • Accountability – the Executive Headteacher is accountable to The Governors Board for the attainment and progress of every student in the school, the curriculum they receive and the leadership and management decisions that help this to happen
  • Pupil achievement – the Board establishes an ethos of expectations and aspirations for all. It will identify how well the school and individual students are achieving and challenge any under-performance of cohorts and groups each year and over time. It identifies whether students are making expected progress, and where students fall behind, what action the school is taking to support those students, and whether that remedial action is successful
  • Financial Management – the Governors Board has overall responsibility of the delegated budget and reviews the finances regularly to ensure that the school is on track and obtaining value for money
  • Staffing – whilst recruitment and appointment of new staff is the responsibility of the Executive Headteacher, the total number of staff employed remains the Governors Board’s responsibility. They appoint the Executive Headteacher and carry out the performance management of the Executive Headteacher each year. Retention of good staff and leadership planning is an important consideration for the Governors Board
